WE AND OUR YELLOW RIVER: THRIVING TOGETHER
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The issue of the Yellow River has become the biggest concern of members of the Chinese peoples Political Consultative Conference. My childhood, in fact, is closely associated with the river. My father is an engineering geologist, and he used to take me with him on his trips to the hydropower stations on the river. I enjoyed those trips, especially the trip to Longyang Xia reservoir. Although ten years have passed since my visit, I can still recall the scenery; I can still recall the water I saw at the reservoir. It was pure, clean and blue, not like the water I saw in the middle reaches of the river, which had turned brown and muddy after passing through the Loess Plateau.
Once during our stay at the power station, we were caught in a thunderstorm. And when rain stopped, I could see trickles of water rolling down mountain slopes and flowing into the reservoir. It carried little mud or sand, because at that time, trees and grass still grew around the reservoir. And they protected the soil. At Longyang Xia I was struck by the beauty of nature, and as a child I wanted to stay there and to grow up with our Yellow River.
Li Bai, the Tang Dynasty poet, said praises to the flowing water in the Yellow River. He saw it as coming down from heaven and nurturing the people along her way to the sea. However, in 1997,for 330days, not a single drop of water from the Yellow River went into the sea. And droughts are not the only punishment by nature. A friend of my father"s, a university professor, is doing research on the Yellow River. According to this professor, the Yellow River will soon change its course if we allow this situation to continue. Because there is no longer enough water to carry away the silt and mud in the lower reaches of the river and the riverbed rises higher and higher each year.
We have taken too much from nature, but given back too little in return. And this is the cost of the unbalanced growth. If we had taken care of the vegetation in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River, we would still experience the river as Li Bai described it.
While the developed countries are consuming proportionally more natural resources than the rest of the world, they"ve also taken some good measures in protecting nature. And as a developing country, China can learn from them in this aspect.
Last year, when I was visiting Australia with a group of Chinese students who had won prizes in an English Skills Test, our Australian hosts invited us to join them for a horse-ride in the mountains. After two hours on horseback, we reached a valley, where there was a most beautiful meadow, with flowers in all colors dotted on a huge blanket of green. When I began to praise the beauty of nature, my friends told me that in this valley, there used to be a big mine and the wastewater from the mine turned everything brown. When the mine was abandoned, people made great efforts to restore the green vegetation. They also used the latest biological technology choosing the best grass seeds suitable for the local soil. So the beautiful meadow is a result of commitment, hard work, and new technology.
What happened to this valley in Australia should also happen to our Yellow River and, in fact, it is happening. I have seen farmers planting trees on mountains along the Yellow River. I have seen them climb the mountain tops with seedlings on their shoulders because they had no machinery. I have seen them pour on trees the water they had carried up in buckets from miles down the valley. These farmers are quietly nourishing our Yellow River, just as the river has nourished them.
And these farmers, men and women I don"t know, gave me the confidence that we and our Yellow River will grow together, and someday in the future, we will be able to drink the clean water from our Yellow River again, because she is our dearest mother.

opportunities and challenges
first, i would like to know, what does your destiny offer you? happiness, wisdom, a strong body or something else. if i had asked this question to president nixon, he would probably had said,”our destiny offers not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity.”
needless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to china is the xx olympic games. till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. how much changes have you seen? new roads, new subway lines, public-exercising equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.
other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the olympic games that cannot be seen directly. for example, more and more people will get to know china. i’m sure the mysterious chinese culture will attract them strongly. and the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. what is more, olympic games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of chinese youth with the olympic values and the olympic spirit. now that we have seen so many advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?
i’ve already said a lot about the olympics and china. but i think everyone should use some time to think of this question, ”does the olympic games have any special meaning to you?”
for us, i mean the chinese youth, xx olympic games is a tremendous gift. because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying the love given to us .the society is just like a ship, and in our dreams the captain is waving his hand and saying ”hey! come here and take the helm! ”how charming his voice is, but we have never heard of it in our true life. this morning, however, when we wake up, we will see the olympic games waving its hand. after chewing, most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the olympic games. and mine is to be a “comforter” ----that is someone who will give comfort to others.
at the end of my speech, i hope all the preparation will go well, and everyone will show their ability to the world. let us seize opportunities and give a big smile to challenges.
1.Agree or disagree: Universities should abolish the practice of cutting off the electricity at dormitory at night.
I agree with it. As a student, I should say, university shouldn"t cut off electricity at dormitory at night. The original intention for university to cut off electricity is to ensure our rest for some students will stay up very late if there is nothing to limit them. However, these students are minority. Most students have regular timetable. What more, we are now already in university, I think we should be treated like high school students any longer. Especially in summer hot days, no electricity at night would be a nightmare to all students. We can"t fall asleep without electric fans. I can"t just imagine that. Universities should think more for their students and trust their self-control.
2.Some say music training in college is unnecessary, while others do not believe so. What is your opinion on this issue?
I should say, music training in college is necessary, especially for non-art students. To be honest, nowadays?college students are also under much pressure. We have to attend many complex courses everyday. Many students get tired and gloomy. Then, if there is a music course, it will greatly release our bad mood. And we will have a nice mood and more energy to continue our study. Besides, it"s commonly believed that music training can cultivate people"s character. It will make people more calm and wise as well as elegant. In fact, nowadays, many parents send their children to attend music course at a very young age. These parents hope their children will have a elegant and smart mind. Many of today"s students in university didn"t have adequate music training at their former school. If university can open related music course, it will be of great use for students?cultivation.
1.Agree or disagree: There is nothing that young people could teach old people.
In ancient times, young people should never teach old people. Old people know much more than young because they have undergone many things in their life. They lead us to the right way. Sometimes, it regarded impolite for young to teach old. But that does not mean young people really have nothing to teach old people, especially in this high-developed times. Young people usually learn things fast and learn more. They always have a smart head for new things. Therefore, young people can teach the olds how to use computer and cellphone, how to dance and so on. Also, I think old people can learn younger passion and energetic for life. That will be a good thing.
2.Should pets be allowed in university dormitories?
In my opinion, by no means should pets be allowed in dormitories. To be honest, I"ve been thinking in my mind to have a pet in my dorm. Lovely pets will bring much joy to our daily life. But I eventually didn"t do that. Why? Because it is something selfish and irresponsible. Dormitory is a place where several people live together. To a certain degree, it is a public place. We can"t just comply with our own desire while ignore other roommates?feeling. Having a pet in dorm can be troublesome or even annoying. It may make the room dirty and even in a mess. What"t worse, some people are allergic to certain animals. Also, people"s rest can be guaranteed. Some people may say that we could choose a mild and little pet such as fishes. In this case, if your roommates don"t reject, I think it is acceptable.

高三的语文阅读课上，L老师激情飞扬地讲述着南方S城的繁华，从此小X对这个城市充满了好奇，决心一定要去看看，梦想渐渐生根发芽。
小X性格温顺，但她智商很低，小学时前三名都与她无缘。初中时代的主题是嫉妒和羡慕，总认为别人的都是好的，相貌平平、没有才艺的她，生活在自卑中。一直到高中的这节语文课，她有了梦想去的地方！

学院的某次会议上，L院长告诉大家优秀的学生可以申请全国各大高校的夏令营，算是为保研做准备，成绩还行的她也梦想着通过保研去S城，于是就开始申请夏令营，为了签字盖章，几乎天天跑老师办公室；给高校老师打电话咨询；担心错过重要机会，手机不敢没电、不敢没话费；失败的消息传来时，偷偷躲在被窝里哭泣；心情不停的起伏。终于接到S城某校审核通知的那天，她非常激动的跟亲人朋友分享，她知道去S城的机会终于来了！挑战也随之而来：她必须按照该校要求准备自我介绍、个人推荐信、个人风采展示PPT，所有材料全部是英文，只有面试通过她才可被录取，才可永远生活在S城。她厚着脸皮请老师同学帮忙反复修改，又在师兄师姐的帮助下，反复修改制作的PPT，反复练习英语口语和发音，自以为准备的相当充分，信心满满地前往S城参加面试。然而她没想到遇到的对手竟那么强大，年少无知的她被狠狠的甩在对手身后，面对沉重的打击和持续的压力，一走出面试的场地，就伤心的哭了，行走在车来车往的马路上，任凭眼泪如雨水滑落。S城不欢迎她，无奈返回，疲惫地坐火车上看《钢铁是怎样炼成的》，内心无比惆怅，第一次前往S城，竟是如此失败。
随着时间推移，学校保研的帷幕悄悄拉开又落下，在这场无硝烟的战争中，灿烂地笑到最后的仅剩那么几个人。结果出来那天，她痛哭着和父亲商量自己未来的路，因为她没有获得梦寐以求的保研资格，只剩保送读本校硕师计划的机会，或者加入考研行列，站在命运的十字路口，该何去何从？虽然家里情况不允许她和姐姐同时考研究生，但父亲给出这样的建议：我希望你过一种丰衣足食，安稳平淡的生活，当老师也是不错的选择，但最终如何走还是你自己决定。权衡了各种因素，经过一周激烈的思想斗争，最终选择了硕师计划。她智商很低，但学习一直很用功，考研对她来说不是问题，做出这样决定令所有同学惊讶，也有不少老师为她感到惋惜，觉得考研或许有更光明的路，但她想借这三年在家乡教学的机会，当个好老师，积累工作经验，孝敬照顾日渐苍老的父母，所以不后悔，唯一觉得对不起的是年少时的梦，去S城的梦想难道就此搁置？难道真的是因为体会了S城的压力而害怕了吗？难道仅仅因为被打击一次就再不敢前往？不！绝不！匆匆夏令营，没来得及感受S城的繁华，她想再去一次！
没有考研压力，接下来有充足时间去实习，她决定借实习的机会再去S城。此行举步维艰：学校明文规定不允许学生私自联系到校外实习，父母担心不安全，临走时姐姐再三叮嘱，男友各种好心规劝，好友也表示不解，她还是决心前行。接下来的经历将永远深藏在她记忆深处：自上学以来，她从未违反过学校规定，从没有顶撞过老师，从没有不听父母的话，从不敢做错误的事，但内心渐生厌恶。学校到处弥散着令人堕落的气息：穿着时尚、打扮的光彩照人的女学生竞相攀比着；花园里情侣们卿卿我我；宿舍里每天都有人摆着吸大烟一样的姿势没黑夜没白天的扣手机、打游戏；宿舍的厕所发出一股恶臭的气味，也不会有人主动打扫；实验室的师姐每天不紧不慢的看电视剧，因为清贫的导师迟迟不肯批准买试剂，最后只能靠修改数据完成毕业论文；义正言辞的C长只顾升职加薪，却害怕承担责任；趋炎附势的W导，拿着鸡毛当令牌，狐假虎威地吓唬学生，却从来不为学生的发展着想，从来不听学生的心声，只搞面子工程。诸如此类，与其咒骂，不如无视，于是她请假条都没交，寄出行李，买了火车票悄悄前往S城。liuxue86.com
在火车上总会结识一些陌生的朋友，跟随他们一起乘坐不熟悉的地铁，相视一笑，只有一面之缘，然后各自分别各自走好。背着沉重的行李，寻找落脚点，接受了高昂的住宿费，戒备着每一个陌生的人，抵触着新宿舍的肮脏和拥挤，渐渐了解社会人。正午时分，第一次经历坐反车，在公交车上被挤的迷迷糊糊，以至于始终没搞清楚218路线到底是怎样的。不过她渐渐适应环境，每天早上只吃一个凉馒头加酱菜，晚上忍受着房东送的散发着臭味的被子，室友不时的喊骂声会把刚入睡的她吵醒，下铺的女孩恶狠狠的眼神回复她友好的招呼，她接受这一切，相信一切会变得好起来，开始进入自己的角色，认真地完成老师交给的任务，积极地向学姐学习技术，友好地和同事和谐相处，告诉自己周围的人并不是坏人，努力让一切变得像预想的一样棒。上周还去游玩了S城的一个著名景点，下周还计划去参观S城的大教堂并给远方的朋友寄出祝福！这就是她想要的经历，她体会到了胜利的瞬间，而且将会永远的走下去，直到实现所有关于S城的梦想。
若干年后的某个秋天，凉风吹乱头发，再想起那时疲惫落魄的自己，请不要再埋怨任何人，梦想仍在，坚持远行！

大学校园的六月是缤纷而湿润的：张扬而伤情的告别、执手相看泪眼、共同回忆曾经的光荣与梦想、还有那散场之后老歌的余音缭绕……这些，组成了我们每一个人对于大学的难忘记忆。毕业的时刻，也是一个感伤的时刻，有道是：笔砚相亲，晨昏欢笑，奈何离别今朝。就在这样一个季节里，老师要和你们说再见了。刚入学的时候，你们可能觉得毕业遥遥无期;如今，你们已经明白，时光是如此的匆忙，似乎在弹指一挥间，人生中至为宝贵的大学时光就要成为永久的回忆了!睡在上铺的兄弟，阅览室里心仪许久的女生，食堂里三年如一日的饭菜，还有许多被你们在背后起了外号的老师……昨天还是那么真实地存在，明天就会成为回忆了。回首这三年，我相信大家都会感慨万千，孤单过、快乐过、努力过、挫折过，失败过、成功过、哭过、笑过、迷惘过、希望过，但无论怎样，在千滋百味的大学三年如白驹过隙时，我们都知道，从今天起，你们毕业了!
其实，每年的初夏，校园里的老师都会度过一段夹杂着喜悦与忧伤的炎炎夏日。大家会发现那些曾经坐在自己的课堂中，或是认真地听讲、或是埋头笔记、或是无聊地张望、或是窃窃私语的学生，几天之内突然从自己的视线中消失了;会发现那些曾经使自己或者自信、或者骄傲、或者不安、或者担心、或者愤怒的小家伙们，突然之间长大了、成熟了、要自谋生路了。此时此刻，老师们的心情总是复杂和别样的。
在我及全体老师将成为大家大学时代的回忆之前，我想利用最后的这次机会，给大家提几个建议：首先，无论将来你在什么样的岗位，都不要放弃梦想，不放弃梦想，是所有成功者必须拥有的心态。其次，时时刻刻不要忘记继续学习。无论你是否从事自己的专业工作，无论你是否从事你自己喜欢的工作，也无论这么多年学习的知识是否能够学以致用。第三，要“踏踏实实做事，老老实实做人”。同学们在新的工作岗位上，一定要认真做事，踏踏实实，努力从平凡、不起眼的工作做起，不要好高骛远、急功近利。把自己的本职工作做好就是最大的成功。最后，勇于进取。“毕业”的英文单词“graduation”这个词的词根没有“完成”、“结束”的意思，而是蕴含开始、进步。这就是对毕业最好的诠释。我们今天在这里举行毕业典礼，不是庆祝“结束”，不是纪念“完成”，而是欢呼开始，是向未来的“进步”宣战。“雄关漫道真如铁，而今迈步从头越”，曾经辉煌的同学请你们不要骄傲，曾经迷失的同学更不要气馁，机会对大家都是平等的，只要肯努力，时间会给大家在社会这张答卷上一个满意的评分。

今天，是学校每年一度的盛大节日。我们欢聚在这里，隆重举行二○○九年度毕业典礼，为五千余名09届毕业博士生、硕士生和本科生壮行。在此，我谨代表校党委、校行政向学业有成，即将告别母校、踏上新的人生征途的全体毕业生表示最衷心的祝贺!同时也向长期为培养人才而辛勤劳作、无私奉献的老师们表示衷心的感谢!
同学们，回首过去的几年，你们立志成才、刻苦学习、“博文明理”，在校园留下了辛勤的汗水、奋斗的足迹和激扬奋发的青春豪情。你们的拼搏与努力，已在中南大结出了丰硕的成果!无论是在获取知识、砥砺人生、关注社会、服务大众的成长过程还是在辩论赛、挑战杯、数学建模大赛、英语知识竞赛等国际、国内各类活动中，都取得了优异成绩。这些成绩的取得，是你们的荣耀，更是学校的荣耀!
同学们，在你们即将离开学校之际，请允许我作为师长，在这里多几句叮咛和祝福。
一是面对困难要学会微笑。微笑被人誉为“解语之花，忘忧之草”。我们常说“微笑是最好的名片”。微笑蕴含着幸福，微笑饱含着生机，微笑中充满了永恒与希望。微笑时可以从容面对冷漠、热情、嘲讽、仇视、关怀、成功、失败……微笑是激励人走向成功的一种力量。
二是面对未来要充满信心。成功并不遥远，但成功不是一蹴而就的，只有量的积累，才会实现质的飞跃。信心是战胜一切困难的法宝，只要大家充满信心，一步一个脚印，就一定能够“至千里”、“成江海”。请大家记住美国盲人女作家、教育家海伦·凯勒曾说过的一句话“信心是命运的主宰”。
三是面对社会要多几分责任。在生活中，处处都有责任的考验，包括对家庭、单位、社会乃至国家的责任。作为一名有良知、高素质的青年，要勇于担当责任，矢志惠济天下。对自己负责，责任是严格的教官;对别人负责，责任是生命财产安全的保证;对国家负责，它是社会进步的条件。责任，是大家不可丢弃的使命，更是激励我们不断求索、不断创造、不断前进的不竭动力。
四是面对责难要学会理解和宽容。同学们，踏入社会，离开了老师们的呵护，你们也许会面对更多的责难和苛求。面对上司的苛求、同事的责难，要学会理解和宽容。人之间，因为有了理解和宽容，才会有心灵的沟通，才会有深厚的友谊，才会有生活的美好和社会的和谐，才能化干戈为玉帛，化仇恨为谅解。
同学们，几天后，你们将离开校园，分赴四面八方。希望你们牢记“厚德济世”的校训，发扬奋斗进取的精神，创造感天动地的业绩，走好人生道路上的每一步，在中南大的史册上书写辉煌的一笔!母校会永远关视着你们、支持着你们，永远是你们坚强的后盾!
